Amazon, PayPal, Twitter, Twitch, Reddit, Deliveroo and many others are affected by a global outage that makes part of the web inaccessible.
The problem seems to be related to the cloud edge platform Fastly, which hosts some of the affected services.
You have probably noticed it: part of the web is inaccessible this morning. It is indeed impossible to connect to some of the biggest websites, including, for example, Amazon, PayPal, Twitter, Twitch or Reddit since a few hours.
The concerned sites answer erratically to the requests and display sporadically incomplete web pages, without style sheet.
Everything indicates that the common denominator of the affected sites is a cloud provider.
This time, however, it is not Cloudflare, which has been responsible for some of the most memorable outages in recent years, but the competing cloud provider Fastly.
This player has been gaining more and more recognition for some time now thanks to its innovative services.
Who Fastly Actually Is? and What Do They Offer?
Fastly delivers a solution that the firm calls cloud edge. In concrete terms, this means delivering the services of these sites via servers physically located as close as possible to the customers and users.
For the moment we have very little information on the causes of this failure and the efforts that Fastly is mobilizing to restore the situation.
The provider simply says on its page dedicated to the status of its services “we are currently investigating a potential performance impact with our CDN services”.
Nevertheless, you only have to spend a few minutes on the web to realize how serious the problem is. Especially since major payment solutions like PayPal are also affected.
In addition, Fastly also manages the cloud infrastructure of payment services such as Stripe and Shopify used by thousands of merchants in France.
The cloud provider’s site itself is only intermittently accessible. It is hoped that the situation will be restored quickly.
We will of course update this article as soon as new information on the causes of this outage is known.
